Wikis and Blogs

October 31, 2007 at 2:16 pm

Hello All,

For any people making their last minute, pre-AMS blog checks, I’ll take this opportunity to let you know that Phil Ford (of Dial M for Musicology) and I are talking on a panel hosted by the Committee on Career Related Issues on Thursday evening.  The title of the session is “Collaborative Internet Tools: Working with Management Issues” and it takes place at 5:15.  So, if don’t mind missing the first hour of the opening reception, come on over and partake in the discussion.  Phil has prepared a great talk about blogging titled “Anarchy in the AMS: Blogging as Commons-Based Peer Production” and I’ll be discussing the Musicology Job Wiki (which I first wrote about back in June).

I’ll also take a moment to mention this year’s Presidential Forum titled: “Diversity: Strengths and Challenges.”  Despite its problematic title, diversity within the AMS remains even more so.  If you feel like diversity doesn’t concern you, all the more reason why you should go.  It begins at 5:15 on Friday and is only an hour long, leaving plenty of time for hanging at the hotel bar.  There are some great panelists: Gurminder Bhogal, Seow-Chin Ong, Guy Ramsey, and Leonota Saaveda.  The whole thing is chaired by Charles M. Atkinson.

I’m looking forward to catching up with friends and colleagues as well as making and meeting new ones.

Safe travels everyone!
